New Mom, New City, No Village
A mom who recently moved to Annapolis shared how lonely she’s felt seven weeks into motherhood. Without family or friends nearby, she’s spending most days at home or walking, while also struggling with breastfeeding and wondering if she’s producing enough milk. Moms immediately rallied around her with encouragement to get out of the house—even just for coffee, a snack or Babies in Bloom at the library. One mom said she met one of her now-best friends there! Others recommended Mommy & Me Yoga at Blue Lotus and offered to connect privately and become mom friends. One of the most reassuring messages? “It’s all temporary, and you will eventually find your path through it.”
Is 26 Kids Too Many for Kindergarten?
A mom whose child started kindergarten at Severna Park Elementary wondered if 26 students per classroom was typical. Her child’s class has three teachers plus a floating aide, but 26 kids still felt like a lot. The group weighed in: 37% said it’s normal, 14% called it crazy, and 49% said it’s way too many. Clearly, there are plenty of opinions on what today’s kindergarten classrooms should look like!
When Infidelity and Mental Health Collide
A mom asked for recommendations for a compassionate, preferably Christian therapist or psychiatrist for a friend’s husband who recently confessed to repeated infidelity and is struggling emotionally. She described him as not sleeping, crying and overthinking, while also being resistant to hospitalization. Moms recommended resources, including Rogue River Counseling and Desert Solace Rehab, while others emphasized that the wife’s own well-being and safety should be a priority too. It was a difficult conversation, but one that clearly resonated with many members.
Finding the Right Oncologist After a Stage 4 Diagnosis
A mom shared that her mother was recently diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that has spread to her bones. She is now seeking a second opinion. She asked for recommendations for an oncologist with experience in metastatic breast cancer and a great bedside manner, as well as suggestions for helping her mom sleep more comfortably despite significant pain. Moms who have personally experienced stage 4 breast cancer shared incredibly hopeful stories and recommended doctors, including Dr. Young Lee, Dr. Ravin Garg, Dr. Carol Tweed and Dr. Jason Taksey. One mom also shared that an adjustable bed has helped tremendously with pain and positioning at night.
Halloween Costumes — FREE ONLY!
The annual Annapolis Moms free Halloween costume thread is officially here! Normally posted later in September, it went up early this year because our super-organized moms were already asking. The response was HUGE: more than 89 moms posted costumes to give away for free! From costumes kids have outgrown to families looking for something new, the thread is another perfect example of moms helping moms—and keeping perfectly good costumes out of the trash. And yes, it’s officially acceptable to start thinking about Halloween in September.
