Looking for trusted recommendations and real-life advice from local moms? Our weekly Real Mom Recap highlights the most engaging conversations from the Annapolis Moms Facebook group. From parenting wins to everyday challenges, here’s a roundup of what sparked conversation across our community this month.
Week of Nov. 9
This week on The Real Mom Recap — a teacher rallies the community to help a pregnant teenager, a two-year-old dreams of meeting real firefighters, a breast cancer survivor desperately wants her life back, and moms tackle the impossible balance between staying home with their babies and paying the bills. Plus, what happens when the pharmacy runs out of your hormones?!
A Teen Mom, a Baby Girl, and a WHOLE LOT of Love!
A teacher reached out to help one of her students, who’s expecting her first baby in December. The young mom-to-be has very little and will be taking the bus with her newborn to attend her school program. Her biggest need? A stroller!
And Annapolis Moms did what Annapolis Moms does BEST!
Donations started pouring in, Artsy Partsy offered to be a drop-off location, and moms recommended the TPEP program. Even better, women who had been teen moms themselves shared their success stories and encouragement.
Sometimes, it really does take a village. And this village SHOWED UP!
Calling All Firefighters! We Have a Two-Year-Old Superfan!
One mom has a little boy who is completely OBSESSED with firefighters, fire trucks and everything that goes WEE-OOO WEE-OOO!
Her question? Can you just show up at a fire station with a toddler and say hello?
Apparently, sometimes you can! Moms shared stories of successful visits to local fire stations and recommended upcoming open houses and Touch-a-Truck events.
Because when you’re two years old, meeting a real firefighter might just be better than Disney World.
Seven Surgeries Later…She Just Wants Her Life Back.
After a breast cancer diagnosis in 2024, one mom expected her double mastectomy and reconstruction to be relatively straightforward. Instead, she’s endured multiple infections, hospital stays and SEVEN surgeries — and she’s still experiencing complications.
She’s exhausted and desperately wants to find a reconstructive surgeon who can help her finally move forward.
Moms shared recommendations, including the Mercy Hospital team, Dr. Claire Duggal and Dr. Kelly Sullivan, along with their own breast cancer experiences.
But perhaps most importantly, they offered something else: understanding, encouragement and the reminder that she isn’t alone.
Stay Home With the Baby…or Go Back to Work?
One mom of a six-month-old is facing a dilemma so many families understand. She loves being home with her baby, but one income isn’t quite covering the bills. They’re budgeting carefully and sometimes dipping into savings.
So does she find a flexible part-time job — otherwise known as the mythical unicorn job — or try to make staying home work?
Moms suggested evening waitressing, gym childcare jobs where she might bring her baby, and private elder care. Others encouraged her to explore food pantries and available assistance programs while weighing those options against the high cost of childcare.
Because sometimes the hardest part of being a stay-at-home mom is figuring out how to afford staying home.
CVS Is Out of My Hormones…NOW WHAT?!
One mom had gone three days without her prescribed progesterone and estrogen patches because CVS couldn’t fill her prescriptions. Dealing with a terrible headache, weepiness and general misery, she was desperate to find another pharmacy.
And the moms came through with alternatives!
Suggestions included Elevation Pharmacy, Cape Drugs, The Professional Pharmacy Group and mail-order options like CVS Caremark.
The discussion was a good reminder that when your regular pharmacy can’t fill a prescription, it’s worth asking your pharmacist or prescriber about other places that may have it available.
From helping a young mom prepare for her baby to supporting women through cancer, financial challenges and everyday frustrations, this week’s conversations reminded us that sometimes all it takes is one post to find a whole community ready to help. That’s the power of Annapolis Moms.
