The world has changed, A LOT, over the last few years. From pandemics to new working conditions, it’s no surprise that many parents are feeling anxious, stressed out, and uncertain. With mindfulness simultaneously emerging into the forefront of the world’s society as a way to counter these stressful situations, there’s no better way to join in than by participating in local yoga sessions!
Every Saturday this fall, Sunrise Yoga on the Dock will take place from 8:00 am to 9:00 am in downtown Annapolis. Located at 17 Francis St. Annapolis, MD, this adult wellness offering is run by Healthy Bodies/Healthy Minds Yoga and Katrice Nelson Wellness. This free class aims to relax and de-stress using vinyasa style and a meditative-focused approach coupled with movement and yoga flow. Whether you’ve just stepped onto the mat or are an experienced yogi, this class is the perfect way to kick off your Saturday mornings.
“Parents of young children benefit from yoga. Yoga, especially restorative yoga, is similar to the benefits of massage,” said Katrice Nelson, RYT, Executive Director of Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Yoga. “Yoga provides an opportunity for rest and meditation which calms the nervous system and can provide a peaceful way to relax.”
Yoga has many benefits and, due to its free-flowing, accommodating nature, is accessible for all! Through breath control, meditation, and physical postures, yoga fosters a sense of inner calm and mindfulness, helping individuals manage anxiety and improve mental clarity. It also enhances overall health by improving circulation, supporting heart health, and boosting immunity. By promoting self-awareness and a deeper connection between mind and body, yoga offers a path to long-term well-being and personal growth.
If Saturday doesn’t work for you or you’re looking to double up on your yoga fix, Sunday Somatic Yoga is another great option! Participants are invited to explore a more intuitive approach to yoga, deepening your body’s sense of awareness surrounding emotions and sensations. This yoga practice takes a more holistic approach to health and wellness through mindful breathing, tension-releasing movements, and mindful breathing. Thanks to Healthy Bodies/Healthy Minds Yoga, this weekly class is free of charge, just make sure to register in advance!
Being a parent brings a host of its own stressors and challenges. “Yoga is a proactive approach to wellness. It is therapy through movement. It can be a bonding experience for families. It is a way to offer loving kindness to yourself,” said Nelson. With an open mind and positive attitude, yoga can provide a stress-reducing space that creates a more present mindset, ultimately leading you to be the best parent you can!
