The other night I was watching the documentary The Greatest Night in Pop about the making of the 1985 charity single, “We are the World.” Several of the singers, such as Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper, said that they felt shy and like they didn’t belong there with the other singers. Bob Dylan was so nervous and felt so out of place that the whole room had to leave so he could feel less nervous. BOB DYLAN!
The whole thing got me thinking about how so many of us feel insecure or have Imposter Syndrome, where a person feels like they don’t deserve the success they have because they are frauds. Lately, I’ve been in contact with so many women who brush off compliments or invitations because they don’t feel that they are worthy. Many of us miss out on some great opportunities because we don’t feel deserving.
So here’s the thing, if Bob Dylan can be insecure, then I would have to say that it is likely simple human nature to worry that we are being judged and concerned that we aren’t worthy. We reject the compliments and don’t ask for a raise. We feel that we haven’t earned a thank you or a seat at the table when important decisions are being made.
So mamas, make a decision today to choose one thing you will do to help you overcome your insecurity. Here are a few ideas:
1) Ask for something you want from another person.
2) Talk to yourself positively. Tell yourself that you deserve good things!
3) Stop rejecting compliments and simply say “Thank you!”
We’ve got this! We are worthy enough right now, just as we are!
