Week of Oct. 26
At 42, She Just Found Out Her Dad is Not Her Biological Father.
What started as a fun 23andMe birthday gift turned into a family bombshell. A mom learned that she and her brother were conceived using anonymous sperm donors — and might not even have the same biological father!
Her dad passed away 23 years ago, and nobody else in the family knows. Now she’s questioning everything from her family history to whether she wants to find her biological father.
Moms shared similar discoveries, recommended therapy and Facebook groups for donor-conceived adults, and reminded her that the family who raised and loved her is still her family.
Frozen Shoulder…Now on the OTHER Side?!
After two miserable years of frozen shoulder, one mom finally got relief — only to develop excruciating pain in her OTHER shoulder. We’re talking being awake since 2 a.m. with burning pain.
Moms immediately started talking about the possible connection between frozen shoulder and perimenopause and menopause. Recommendations included Opal Physical Therapy, Dr. Rachel Mallalieu, acupuncture and discussing hormone therapy with a clinician. Others encouraged a thorough orthopedic evaluation to make sure nothing else was causing the pain.
Four Days of Diarrhea. Family Emergencies. And She’s DONE.
After a week of family emergencies, including a death, one mom was physically and emotionally drained. Add four days of nonstop watery diarrhea and dehydration, and she was desperate for relief without spending hours in the ER.
Moms offered lots of compassion and suggested Chesapeake IV Express, Restoration Hydration and Gatorlyte.
Several days of severe diarrhea with dehydration can be dangerous and warrant prompt medical attention rather than relying on an at-home IV service alone.
When Your Psychiatrist Makes You Feel WORSE.
After two years of frightening medical issues, seizures and intense health anxiety, one mom finally sought psychiatric help — but left her appointment feeling dismissed and confused.
She said the psychiatrist insisted on a diagnosis that conflicted with her neurologist’s assessment, discouraged questions and prescribed Zoloft after a 45-minute appointment.
Moms had A LOT to say. Many felt the interaction raised red flags and encouraged her to seek a second opinion, find a therapist separately and work with professionals who welcome questions.
Because asking questions about your own health shouldn’t feel like an argument.
After 28 Years of Marriage…How Much Alimony Do You Ask For?
A 55-year-old mom preparing for divorce was asked by her mediator to propose an alimony amount and duration. Her husband earns three times her salary, their children are grown, and they’re selling the family home.
Her question: How do you put a dollar amount on starting over after 28 years?
Moms suggested building a realistic budget, reviewing retirement accounts and getting independent legal and financial advice. Some encouraged starting high and negotiating, while others recommended the Second Saturday divorce workshop offered through CovingtonAlsina.
The takeaway? Don’t pull a number out of thin air when your financial future is on the line.
From family secrets to health struggles and starting over after divorce, this week’s conversations were a reminder that sometimes the most important thing Annapolis Moms offers is a place to ask the questions we’re afraid to ask anywhere else.
