The Real Mom July Recap

July 26, 2026 by Lisa Peri, MSW

Looking for trusted recommendations and real-life advice from local moms? Our weekly Real Mom Recap highlights the most engaging conversations from the Annapolis Moms Facebook group. From parenting wins to everyday challenges, here’s a roundup of what sparked conversation across our community this month.

Week of July 26

Airplane Etiquette Debate

A heated discussion took off after one mom asked whether it’s acceptable to recline your airplane seat. After another passenger repeatedly kicked and grabbed her seat during an evening flight, moms debated passenger etiquette, personal space, and whether reclining is a right—or just plain rude.

Middle School Without a Cellphone

One parent shared that her rising sixth grader won’t be getting a cellphone anytime soon and asked how other families manage friendships and playdates without one. Parents offered creative ideas for staying connected while delaying smartphones, from family messaging apps to old-fashioned phone calls.

Loving Someone Battling Alcoholism

An anonymous bride-to-be opened up about her fiancé’s recent struggle with alcoholism after he entered an inpatient treatment program. While committed to supporting his recovery, she asked for advice from others who have navigated addiction in a relationship. The community responded with heartfelt encouragement, recovery resources, and stories of both hope and hard-earned lessons.

Helping a New Graduate Launch Her Career

A proud mom reached out on behalf of her daughter, a recent University of Maryland graduate with degrees in Psychology and Professional Writing, who has struggled to land her first job. Members shared recruiter contacts, networking tips, and entry-level job leads.

A Happy Missed Connection

One mom hoped to reconnect her daughter with twins she befriended at summer camp after losing their mom’s phone number. The feel-good post had a happy ending when Bella and Olivia’s mom saw the post and the families were reunited for a future playdate!

Week of July 19

Sharing the Load at Home

One stay-at-home mom asked whether it’s reasonable to expect more help around the house from a spouse who works two jobs. The conversation sparked a discussion about mental load, division of household responsibilities, and what partnership looks like in different families.

Finding a Forever Home for a Rescued Turtle

After rescuing an injured Eastern painted turtle as a hatchling five years ago, one family is now searching for a sanctuary or wildlife organization that can give him the best life before they move to Florida. Moms shared wildlife rescue contacts and advice for safely rehoming the beloved reptile.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

Annapolis Moms Media founder Lisa Peri shared that she would be stepping away briefly to grieve the loss of her father after his battle with Alzheimer’s. The community responded with an outpouring of condolences, support, and appreciation for everything she has built over the years.

Helping a Young Worker Find Medical Care

A member asked for affordable healthcare resources for an uninsured young landscaping employee experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms. Moms offered recommendations for community health clinics, low-cost medical services, and local resources to help him get the care he needs.

Electrolyte Packet Favorites

Looking to stay hydrated without sacrificing flavor, one mom asked for recommendations for electrolyte packets that taste great without artificial ingredients or gritty textures. The comments filled with favorite brands, flavor suggestions, and hydration hacks.

Week of July 12

Battling Mice on a Budget

A single mom living in a basement apartment asked for help after a growing mouse problem left both her and her child feeling scared in their own home. With finances tight and uncertainty over who should cover pest control, moms shared practical tips, tenant advice, and affordable solutions.

Women at the Helm

One mom is ready to take the captain’s seat! She asked for a female boating instructor to help her become more confident operating her family’s 21-foot boat so she can safely take the kids out on her own this summer. The group quickly responded with instructor recommendations and local boating resources.

Donations That Make a Difference

A member looking to downsize asked for nonprofits that could directly distribute new beach towels, blankets, mugs, tumblers, and other unused supplies to people in need rather than reselling them. Moms came through with organizations making a real impact in the community.

Last-minute Dress Rescue

With a flight to China just hours away, one mom desperately searched for someone who could hem her dress overnight before her brother’s wedding. The community sprang into action—and thanks to a local seamstress, she boarded her 4 AM flight ready for the celebration.

Helping a Spouse Find a New Career

One wife asked whether it’s appropriate to network with recruiters on behalf of her overworked husband, who’s ready to leave the company he’s worked at for 15 years. The post sparked conversations about career transitions, recruiter referrals, and supporting your partner through a job search.

Week of July 5

Emergency Custody After a Frightening Night

One mom shared a terrifying experience after her intoxicated partner became violent in their home, destroying furniture while their young child was present. Thankfully, everyone was safe, and the community rallied with advice on emergency custody, protective orders, legal resources, and words of support.

Kitchen Renovation Recommendations

A homeowner ready to remodel her kitchen asked for trusted contractors in the Annapolis area to bring professionally designed plans to life. Moms shared firsthand recommendations, renovation photos, and tips for choosing the right contractor.

Last-minute Babysitter SOS

After their sitter canceled just hours before a military ball, one family scrambled to find care for their 3-week-old baby. The group stepped in with babysitter referrals, suggested rates for short-notice care, and encouragement for the new parents.

Navigating a Toxic Friend Group

One mom sought advice after noticing a friend’s husband repeatedly bullying the other husbands in their social circle. The discussion centered on setting boundaries, protecting friendships, and deciding when someone’s behavior is too toxic to ignore.

Cocktail Shopping Made Easy

A member planning an event asked for liquor stores with a wide selection of flavored spirits, mixers, and easy parking. Moms shared their favorite local spots for everything needed to mix up creative cocktails for the weekend.

We got to check it out… and WOW! 🤩🏀⚾️

The Annapolis Moms Crew had a chance to check out the brand-new DICK’S House of Sport at Annapolis Mall, and let’s just say… this is NOT your average sporting goods store!

From sneakers and athletic apparel to equipment for just about every sport you can think of, there is SO much to see. And the best part? It’s designed to be an experience, not just a place to grab a pair of sneakers and leave.

Whether you have a serious athlete in your family, a kid who is constantly trying a new sport, or you’re just looking for some new gear, there’s something here for everyone. 🏃‍♀️🏀⚽️🎾

We loved getting a first look and checking everything out—and we think your family is going to have a LOT of fun here, too! Plus you can host Birthday Parties here!
