Local Food Finds

Your weekly dose of some cool food and dining finds around town

  • Is it “puh-kaan”, “pee-kon”, or “pee-kan”?  Hint: it’s the first one. One of our favorite local bakeries, Black Market Bakers’ Christmas preorder menu goes live TODAY (Wednesday, December 13th) at 12PM! Snag delicious treats for the family (or just yourself, no judgment zone) like a pecan tart, chocolate-peppermint cake, or a 4-pack of our favorite blueberry lemon scones.
  • Before you shop till you drop at Midnight Madness downtown this Thursday, December 14th, throw on your ugly Christmas sweater and level up at GameOn bar+arcade in Annapolis for their Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. There will be prizes for the top three ugliest sweaters, a free raffle, BOGO jell-o shots, and more!
  • Born deep in the heart of the Irish Countryside is the infamous Galway Bay Irish Eggnog, handcrafted, imported, distilled, and bottled at Terra Liquors Distillery in Ireland. Smooth Irish whiskey blended with a rich, genuine Irish cream, spiced with vanilla notes – it’s the perfect festive drink. Buy a bottle (or case to gift at your holiday events) at Galway Bay in Annapolis, Killarney House in Davidsonville, or Brian Boru in Severna Park. They also offer eggnog cocktails and toddies, like the peppermint paddy nog (paddy Irish whiskey, peppermint schnapps, eggnog, and hot chocolate, topped with fresh whipped cream).
  • Park Tavern dropped a new menu last week, featuring yummy flavor combos like a chicken brie apple sammie, topped with cranberry marmalade and arugula, served on grilled brioche; and a 12-hour braised short rib, with BBQ braised jus, crispy fried grits, sauteed spinach, and picked veggies. They also have seasonal cocktails on draft – one of which gives back (literally). $1 of each Tito’s Handmade Vodka Yule Mule purchased is being donated to Special Olympics Maryland (bonus:  you’ll be entered into their giveaway to win a Tito’s solo stove).
  • M4 = Meatloaf Mondays at Main and Market. Plan your next date night at Main and Market – get two meatloaf entrees for $30 on Mondays. Choose your topping of mozzarella cheese and marinara; Hungarian mushroom soup; mushroom demi-glace; or a brown sugar rub – garnished with crispy fried onion straws and accompanied by mashed potatoes and sauteed veggies.

Publishing for the 2

Publishing for the 250th anniversary of the United States, Dr. Emily Sneff’s latest book, When the Declaration of Independence Was News, focuses on the nation’s founding document at the moment of its creation in 1776, before anyone knew what the legacy of the Declaration would be or if the United States would win the war against Great Britain. It explores how the Declaration was communicated to people in the new nation and around the Atlantic world and reveals the stories of the many people involved in the process of declaring independence, from printers to soldiers to diplomats to translators.
Dr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. She earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary. She is a consulting curator for exhibitions marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration at the Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe.
