Now that Cinco de Mayo has passed and we’re all licking our wounds from margaritas on a Monday, we return to recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Knowing this, I went on a hunt for some great noodles. I was surprised that Gambrills is somewhat of a treasure in this department!
If you’re looking for a dining experience that delivers big flavor in a broth bowl, let us introduce you to Akira, an upscale ramen house with sleek city vibes and a menu full of bold, comforting Japanese favorites.
When my wife and I walked in, we were warmly greeted and seated right away. The staff couldn’t have been more gracious, and that thoughtful service carried through the entire meal.
The menu features helpful photos for the more unfamiliar items, making it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed.
We kicked things off with a nostalgic Ramune (marble soda) in lychee flavor, which set the tone for a playful but elevated experience.
The Chashu Buns—pillowy-soft steamed buns filled with soy-glazed pork belly, crisp cucumber, and lettuce—were a standout. Messy? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. Big shoutout to the staff who noticed the need for extra napkins before we even asked.

Next came the Kani Salad, a refreshing starter made with julienned cucumber, fish cake, tempura flakes, and salmon roe. Light and full of texture—just what a first course should be.
For the main event, I ordered the Akira Volcano Ramen, a visual showstopper with broth as fiery as its name. Tender pork belly, bold spice, and a perfectly jammy egg made it a noodle lover’s dream. Don’t worry, there are plenty of non-spicy options too.

And dessert? We couldn’t choose between Green Tea Ice Cream and Taiyaki—so we got both (zero regrets). The Taiyaki, shaped like a fish and filled with red bean paste, came warm with a waffle-like texture. The green tea ice cream was cool, earthy, and not overly sweet.
Akira is cozy, stylish, and packed with flavor. Whether you’re a ramen fanatic or just looking for a fun night out, you’ll want this spot on your rotation.
In the mood for Pho or other traditional Vietnamese-style dishes and noodles? VN Noodle (almost literally across the Rt. 3 Hwy) has traditional pho but also offers a TON of specials that often include Bún, a brothless type of Vietnamese dish made with thin rice vermicelli noodles. If you’ve never had this, please do yourself a favor and get some. Carryout vibes here, but totally worth the stop-in for lunch. Also, try Pho Saigon, on Defense Highway in Crofton, which has a lovely seating area and amazing pho as well.
