Once every four years, the greatest soccer teams on Earth come together for the World Cup. This year has been extra special for a couple of reasons. First, the tournament is being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, creating greater awareness and support for the U.S. Men’s National Team and the sport as a whole. Second, the tournament has expanded from 32 teams to 48, giving more nations a chance to compete on the world’s biggest soccer stage. So far, teams like Paraguay and Norway have created upsets and made a name for themselves.
With the closest matches being played in New Jersey and ticket prices running high, Annapolis has come together with watch parties throughout town, giving fans of all nations opportunities to cheer alongside others.
Seasalt Annapolis, a seafood-focused restaurant, is offering watch parties throughout the tournament, with three TVs dedicated to the games, plus fans and lighting on the covered patio, happy hour deals and a dedicated Crush drink bar. Details can be found on their Instagram. Located on Bay Ridge Drive, Dark Horse is also offering watch parties with drink specials and televisions on the patio. Stay up to date with their Facebook page for more information.
Miller’s Ale House and World of Beer are two sports bars and restaurants showing World Cup games as well. Miller’s is offering a “soccer sundae,” made with chocolate doughnuts, vanilla ice cream, caramel and hot fudge, topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry, and served in a souvenir soccer bowl to take home. World of Beer’s happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., which overlaps with several games.
West End Sports Bar and Grill, serving the town since 2006, offers daily rotating specials and several TVs for your World Cup viewing pleasure. Augie’s Mussel House & Sports Bar, which has locations in Annapolis and Virginia, is also offering watch parties that will be posted on its Facebook page. The Annapolis location recently opened in Annapolis Town Center.
Peake Social has also helped bring the World Cup energy downtown by partnering with the restaurants surrounding Market Space, including Annapolis Moms Community Supporter Federal House Bar & Grille. The group hosted a U.S. Men’s National Team watch party last week and another on Monday, drawing massive turnouts. Since the U.S. is now out of the World Cup, it is unclear whether more watch parties will be added, but fans can keep an eye on Peake Social’s social media channels for any upcoming events.
Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat while watching the game, grabbing drinks with friends during the full 90 minutes or gathering outside and making new friends, there are plenty of options to get your World Cup fix in Annapolis.
