How to do More with less
By Gianna Nucci
Capsule wardrobes have recently become popular as people move away from consumerism, desire a more streamlined closet, and want to get dressed effortlessly. Being able to create a nice variety of looks with 30 to 50 pieces is the ultimate goal.
The first step when embracing a capsule wardrobe is to determine a color palette. While most capsules lean toward neutral colors to maximize versatility, it’s fine to incorporate a few accent colors that feel authentic to you. The same goes for prints. Traditional prints – stripes, polka dots, and plaids – are often seen in capsules, but if an animal or floral print feels more you, then go for it. Keep in mind these should be treated as complements to the rest of your closet, versus making up the majority of it.
After you’ve identified a palette, consider your lifestyle and the climate you reside in. There’s a lot of information on what a capsule wardrobe looks like, but you want to ensure the pieces you’re selecting support you. Another key focus when building a capsule wardrobe is quality over quantity.

Since you’re paring down your clothing items, you’ll wear them a lot more and need them to stand the test of time. Focus on quality fabrics and good construction.
As a stylist, here are my recommendations for building a capsule wardrobe:
Bottoms
I suggest keeping your bottom collection neutral. Include a variety of jean washes along with white, beige, and black options in trousers, skirts, and shorts. Feel free to add in a few fun options like faux leather or statement print pants. Outside of workout clothes, I would include a few athleisure options like a twill jogger and elevated leggings for more casual days.

Tops
Prioritize basics like t-shirts and tank tops in neutral colors so you can layer them effortlessly. For dressier looks, opt for a few silk camisoles and shells. There are a lot of top styles, so you really want to consider your personal style here.
Some items listed on capsule wardrobe checklists you may come across might not be your vibe. For instance, do you actually see yourself in a white button-down, or would you prefer a popover blouse instead? These are the types of questions you want to ask yourself when making your shopping list.

Dresses
Opt for dresses that can be worn alone or styled nicely under jackets, sweaters, and over button-downs. For example, try cotton maxi or midi dresses that pair with sandals and a hat in the summer, just as well as a cardigan and boots in the fall.

Coats/Jackets
Third pieces will be your best friend when maximizing what you own. They make an outfit feel more stylized, polished, and provide fresh ways to mix and match. A jean jacket, leather option, and a few blazer styles are a few ideas to get started.

Shoes
Aim for a white, nude, and black pair of flats, heels, boots, and sandals, along with a polished sneaker. Perhaps you prefer a loafer over a ballet flat, or a block heel over a pump. Identify the specific types that work best for your capsule and shop accordingly.

Accessories
Accessories help capsule wardrobes go the distance. Having an everyday necklace, earring, and bracelet or watch is a great place to start. Scarves, hats, and belts are an effortless way to add interest to minimalist looks. Be sure to have a handbag in neutral colorways so you have one to go with every outfit.

Remember, you’re not trying to build a one-wardrobe-fits all closet. Feel free to modify recommendations for your lifestyle, personal preferences, and budget. The goal is to create a wardrobe that feels authentic, functional, and sustainable for you.
