Blondie’s Doughnuts: Happiness in Carb Form

April 16, 2024 by Lynne Streeter Childress

Carbs are my love language, and this is one of the reasons why I was so excited to check out Blondie’s Doughnuts. I’d had their delicious doughnuts a few years ago when their food truck did pop-ups in the area and was delighted to be able to visit them in their brick and mortar store in Edgewater (8 Mayo Road), which opened in October 2023.

Owner Michelle Briggs says that she “..has dough in [her] bones,…” as she learned how to bake from her grandmother. On a trip to New England in 2018, Michelle tasted some delicious potato doughnuts, and was inspired by them to make her own. Her flavors were inspired by both her grandmother’s recipes, as well as other delicious foods she thought would make for a good doughnut. After taking her treats to work and getting feedback from her co-workers, she started doing pop-ups and non-profit events. Eventually, Michelle quit her corporate job and opened Blondie’s as a food truck, which led to her opening her store, running it with her husband. Fun fact: the store is named after the white band that forms around a doughnut as it’s fried.

The day that I visited Blondie’s, I could smell the yummy as I walked in the door. Michelle greeted me, and I went to order. I am not kidding when I say that I took a long time to order, because it was hard to pick from the delicious choices. I decided to get three doughnuts to take home to my family and one to eat there: the Nana Puddin’, the Apple Spice, the Caramel Cheesecake, and the Pretty Kitty, which is Vanilla Bean Custard tossed in Chai Spice Sugar. If that all sounds decadent and wonderful, it is.

I also ordered one of Blondie’s creative, delicious drinks – the Chesapeake Apple Kiss (white lotus, club soda, apple syrup, coconut syrup, pineapple juice) – and sat down to chow down. I think I made audible happy sounds as I bit into the Caramel Cheesecake doughnut, adding to the many oohs and ahhs around me.

As I sat at my table, I noticed patrons repeatedly walked over to Michelle to tell her how much they were enjoying the menu, which includes breakfast sandwiches (with vegan options on weekends!) and cinnamon rolls inspired by her grandmother’s recipe. Blondie’s is a wonderful place to get treats to go, to catch up with friends, or even to work (they have wifi!). Get up from whatever you are doing right now and go to Blondie’s and make yourself happy!

Publishing for the 2

Publishing for the 250th anniversary of the United States, Dr. Emily Sneff’s latest book, When the Declaration of Independence Was News, focuses on the nation’s founding document at the moment of its creation in 1776, before anyone knew what the legacy of the Declaration would be or if the United States would win the war against Great Britain. It explores how the Declaration was communicated to people in the new nation and around the Atlantic world and reveals the stories of the many people involved in the process of declaring independence, from printers to soldiers to diplomats to translators.
Dr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. She earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary. She is a consulting curator for exhibitions marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration at the Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe.
