Anne Arundel Job Search: How to Prove Your Skills When Your Résumé Is Not Traditional

August 3, 2026 by Admin

A career break, change of industry, unfinished degree, or unconventional work history does not mean you have nothing valuable to offer.

Employers are increasingly using skills-based hiring, which places greater emphasis on what applicants can demonstrate rather than relying only on degrees, majors, or grade-point averages.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 70% of employers participating in its Job Outlook 2026 survey reported using skills-based hiring, up from 65% the previous year. Employers most often applied the approach during interviews and applicant screening.

That shift may create new opportunities for Anne Arundel County job seekers whose experience does not fit neatly into a traditional résumé.

Look Beyond Your Job Titles

Skills can come from many parts of life, including:

  • caring for children or relatives
  • managing household schedules and budgets
  • military service
  • volunteering and community leadership
  • freelance or contract projects
  • internships, coursework, and certifications
  • part-time jobs and side businesses

The key is connecting those experiences to the position.

Shawn VanDerziel, president and CEO of NACE, advises:

“What’s most important is for job seekers to articulate the connection between the skills they have gained and the job they are applying for.”

Instead of writing that you “helped organize community events,” explain that you coordinated vendors, managed schedules, communicated with participants, and resolved last-minute problems.

Rather than simply listing “caregiver,” consider the planning, advocacy, recordkeeping, communication, and time-management skills that responsibility required.

Show Evidence, Not Just Keywords

Employers responding to NACE’s survey said candidates should prepare examples of times they used their skills to solve problems.

Before applying, identify three or four skills emphasized in the job description. Then prepare a specific example showing:

  1. the situation you faced
  2. the action you took
  3. the result you achieved

A nontraditional résumé does not need an apology. It needs a clear explanation of how your experience can help the employer.
