Thinking about changing careers can feel like starting over.
But for many Anne Arundel job seekers, the better question may be: Which skills do I already have that another industry needs?
Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation (AAWDC) specifically helps residents identify transferable skills and explore the county’s high-demand H.I.T.C.H. industries: Healthcare, IT/Cybersecurity, Transportation, Construction/Skilled Trades, and Hospitality.
That matters in a job market that continues to shift.
Maryland added about 20,100 jobs during the first eight months of 2026, growing 0.7%, compared with 0.4% nationally. But the gains have not been evenly distributed across industries.

Your Experience May Travel Better Than You Think
A project manager may have skills that translate into healthcare operations. A restaurant manager may already know scheduling, inventory, customer service, and team leadership. A federal contractor may have experience in compliance, technology, logistics, or procurement that applies well outside government work.
Even caregiving, volunteer leadership, military service, freelance work, and running a household can build skills such as organization, budgeting, communication, problem-solving, and time management.
The key is learning how to describe those skills in the language of the job you want.
There Is Help for Career Changers
AAWDC offers career coaching, skills assessments, résumé support, career exploration, training, and help connecting with employers. Its career services specifically include identifying how a person’s current skills may translate into a new occupation.
Maryland is also investing in reskilling programs for industries such as technology, aerospace and defense, life sciences, and manufacturing, giving workers more ways to build on existing experience rather than start from zero.
For job seekers, the takeaway is simple: a career change does not have to erase your past experience. In many cases, it is about repositioning what you already know.
