The Mother’s Day Diaper Drive: Helping to Meet Basic Needs

April 15, 2025 by Stacey Coles

Donate Baby and Hygiene Supplies for the County Library’s Community Pantry, April 15 – May 15

Being a parent is a rewarding but challenging role. You’re thrust into a world where you’re, sometimes single-handedly, responsible for another life. While this naturally comes with hurdles, being unable to provide basic needs for your family should not be one of them.

As of 2023, approximately 9,060 children under the age of 18 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, are living in poverty, representing about 7.9% of the county’s child population.

As inflation worsens, these families need our support more than ever. Annapolis Moms Media is proud to partner with the Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) for our annual Mother’s Day Diaper Drive. Help us uplift the mothers in our community by donating baby supplies and hygiene products for the Community Pantry at Discoveries: The Library at the Mall.

From April 15 through May 15, you can drop your donation off at any AACPL branch during operating hours or make an online contribution at any time.

Donations requested:

  • Diapers (greatest need: sizes 4, 5, 6 & 7)
  • Pull-ups (sizes: 2T/3T, 3T/4T, 4T/5T)
  • Wipes
  • Baby soap, shampoo and lotion
  • Diaper cream
  • Nursing pads
  • Pads and pantyliners
  • Adult toothpaste

Share our flyer on social media to help spread the word!

The Community Pantry at Discoveries: The Library at the Mall is open to anyone in need of basic baby or hygiene supplies. It operates on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to noon and the first Tuesday of each month from 6 pm to 7 pm. Those interested in supporting the pantry can also contribute by donating items through Amazon or Target.

Please note that Discoveries: The Library at the Mall is closed through May 2 as an expansion project is underway. However, Community Pantry donations are still being accepted via a donation bin outside the main library doors in the Annapolis Mall.

You may also drop off your donation items at these supporting sponsor businesses:

📱👀 What Is ALL This Screen Time Really Doing To My Child’s Eyes?

Now that school is out for the summer, many kids are spending even more time on tablets, phones, gaming systems, and TVs. While screens aren't necessarily harmful on their own, too much uninterrupted screen time can contribute to:

🔹 Eye strain and headaches
🔹 Dry, irritated eyes from reduced blinking
🔹 Difficulty focusing after extended screen use
🔹 Increased risk of developing or worsening nearsightedness (myopia)

The biggest misconception is that blue light is the only concern. While blue light can affect sleep when screens are used before bedtime, the bigger issue for children's eye health is often the amount of sustained near work and reduced time spent outdoors.

A few simple ways to support healthy vision:

✅ Follow the 20-20-20 Rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
✅ Encourage outdoor play each day
✅ Remind kids to blink frequently
✅ Schedule regular comprehensive eye exams, even if they pass the school “screening”

Bay Hills Eye Care helps families navigate today's digital world with practical advice, early eye exams, and personalized recommendations to keep growing eyes healthy.
