Sustainable Brands or Secondhand?: Be an Informed Shopper

March 11, 2024 by Heather Greenwell

Sometimes as a parent, it’s hard to know which trends to follow and keep up with. The things that used to be important to us when we were younger tend to evolve as we step into the world of adulthood and responsibility. But one trend that I’ve noticed that’s growing in popularity is adult consignment stores and businesses that offer sustainable clothing brands.

One thing we can all agree with is that knowing where to shop for quality clothes that fall within our budget and expectations is very important. We all want clothing to last throughout multiple wears and seasons. Sometimes it’s a challenge to really know what brands offer that kind of longevity.

Sustainable clothing brands take a more environmentally-conscious approach to fashion. This means that the materials they are made out of support local communities and environmental initiatives. Although the price tag for these items is higher in cost, the key takeaway is that you’re doing more than just buying an item. You’re also supporting the protection of our planet and natural resources.

When you buy clothes secondhand at a consignment store, you’re buying exactly what it says on the label as it was originally made. You’re extending the life of the product while reducing your environmental impact. Want to try out consignment? In our area, check out Savvy Consignment (Severna Park), Honeysuckle Quality Consignment (Arnold), All the Rage Vintage (Annapolis), One Petticoat Lane (Annapolis), and Return to Oz (Annapolis).

If you’re trying to determine which is better, sustainable clothing brands or consignment stores, it’s worth noting that both help to improve the environment compared to high-end or fast-fashion brands. In a grab-n-go culture where clothes are quickly worn and discarded, the most impactful thing we can do is to shop mindfully and with a conscious effort to reduce over-consumption. This helps to prevent unwanted clothing and accessories from ending up in landfill.

The kindest thing we can do is to mix in a combination of both these trends. If you have the means to afford both options, make sure you choose quality over quantity. Looking after your wardrobe properly and with care reduces the number of times you have to replace it. When it’s appropriate, donate any unwanted items so others can continue to repeat the cycle.
