Tackling Sports-Related Acne: Strategies for Treatment and Prevention

March 11, 2024 by Dr. Molly Walterhoefer

Participating in sports and physical activities is excellent for overall health and well-being, but it can sometimes come with an unwanted side effect: acne. Sports-related acne, often caused by sweat, friction, and bacteria buildup, can be frustrating to deal with. However, with the right approach, it’s possible to manage and prevent breakouts effectively. Here’s how:

  1. Practice Good Post-Workout Hygiene:
    • Immediately after exercising, change out of sweaty clothing and shower to remove sweat, bacteria, and oils from the skin’s surface.
    • Consider using a wash with benzoyl peroxide on areas that tend to break out. For the face, look for a cleanser with 4-5% benzoyl peroxide. On the body, go stronger with a 10% wash.
    • Benzoyl peroxide kills acne causing bacteria and reduces inflammation.
  2. Use Salicylic Acid Pads Immediately after Games and Practice:
    • Prevent acne on the go! Keep salicylic acid pads in your bag to immediately wipe down acne-prone areas after activities.
    • Look for pads with 2% salicylic acid to avoid irritation and maintain skin pH balance.
    • Salicylic acid exfoliates off dirt, sweat, and oil on the skin’s surface and effectively unclogs pores.
  3. Clean Equipment Regularly:
    • Helmets and chin straps should be wiped down daily.
    • Look for a hypochlorous acid spray specifically formulated for use on sports equipment. These products are designed to be gentle on materials like plastic and foam while effectively killing bacteria.
    • Hypochlorous acid is gentle yet effective, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
  4. Avoid Whey Protein:
    • Some studies suggest that whey protein supplements may exacerbate acne in certain individuals due to its hormonal effects.
    • Consider alternative protein sources such as plant-based proteins or lean meats to support muscle recovery and growth without risking acne flare-ups.
  5. Choose Non-Comedogenic Products:
    • Opt for SPF, skincare, and hygiene products labeled as non-comedogenic.
    • This means that they are less likely to clog pores and contribute to acne formation.
  6. Wear Breathable Clothing:
    • Choose moisture-wicking fabrics for workout clothing to help keep sweat away from the skin and minimize friction.
    • Avoid tight-fitting clothing that can trap sweat and bacteria against the skin, leading to acne flare-ups.
  7. Consult a Dermatologist:
  • If sports-related acne persists despite your efforts, consider seeking advice from a dermatologist. They can provide personalized treatment options, such as topical medications or oral antibiotics, to help manage your acne effectively.

Sunday mornings done right ☀️🌸🍝

Spent the morning in West Annapolis bouncing between the sweetest local markets and honestly… we didn’t want it to end.

Started at the May Day Market - flowers everywhere, all the spring vibes, and the kids got to make the cutest little May Day baskets 💐✨

Then wandered over to the Annapolis Sons and Daughters of Italy Market and WOW… fresh baked goods, homemade everything, and Italian treats that felt straight out of Nonna’s kitchen 🇮🇹❤️ (yes, we left with cannolis… obviously)

Good food, local finds, and the kind of morning that just feels like spring
