Rock Climbing in Annapolis: An Opportunity for Family Fun, Fitness & Romance

January 14, 2025 by Stacey Coles

Did you know indoor climbing is the most popular form of rock climbing in the United States? Not only is it a great way to help your kids burn energy, but it’s also a fun opportunity to connect with other Anne Arundel County residents and stay active.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Grab the Whole Family: It’s Perfect for Beginners!

No climbing experience? No problem. Indoor rock climbing is a great introduction to the sport, and many facilities have professional instructors and safety equipment in place to guide and minimize risks for newcomers.

As The Gale Encyclopedia of Fitness reports, “Many people learn indoor climbing on a rock fitted with a top rope system and proceed to bouldering and other versions of the sport.”

Plus, it’s a sport for all ages! Some local family programs even show how parents can provide support to their young climbers.

  1. Health Benefits: A Rock-Solid Mind and Core!

Getting in shape or staying active is usually on everyone’s vision board come the New Year. Participating in climbing can help bring that vision to reality. This activity engages your entire body, with a focus on your core and upper body strength.

A study has shown that climbing, including bouldering—a type of rock climbing done on rocky outcroppings close to the ground (20 feet or less) without ropes or harnesses—can also help heal the mind. Researchers observed more than 100 people and found boulderers scored significantly better on depression tests. The difference was equal to moving from a diagnosis of moderate to mild depression.

  1. Mingle for Singles: Begin Your Climb for Love!

Annapolis Moms also recommends taking up the sport to meet singles with similar interests! You never know when Cupid will shoot his arrow. Here are some things to consider when climbing for love:

Pros: The element of danger can get your heart beating fast and inspire some flirty feelings.

Cons: It can be a bit challenging, and you’ll be in a vulnerable position in front of potential suitors.

Check out the winter issue of The Motherlode for more places to meet singles in Anne Arundel County.

  1.  Local Opportunities: Annapolis Beginner Clinics

Ready to get started? Here are some upcoming opportunities at the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center to get you and your child’s feet off the ground!

Rock Climbing 101: For Youth and Parents | 1/18/25 – 2/22/25

This six-week program provides youth and their parents with an introduction to rock climbing. It will include climbing history, the basic gear needed to climb and its proper use, belay skills for parents –so they can support their child when climbing– and basic climbing skills and movements.

Climbing for Fitness | 1/21/25 – 2/25/25

This six-week program introduces rock climbing to adults ages 25 and older. It’ll include the basics of the sport with a focus on history, gear, belay skills, and basic climbing skills. This will be an opportunity to use climbing as another avenue for your fitness routine. It will feature specific climbing-related stretching and yoga warm-ups and certain climbing routes and movements on the climbing wall for a full-body workout. Each 60-minute class will be followed by 30 minutes of free climbing with coaching from staff.

Let us know in the Facebook group your rock climbing experience and if you plan to attend any of the above programs!
