Did you know indoor climbing is the most popular form of rock climbing in the United States? Not only is it a great way to help your kids burn energy, but it’s also a fun opportunity to connect with other Anne Arundel County residents and stay active.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Grab the Whole Family: It’s Perfect for Beginners!
No climbing experience? No problem. Indoor rock climbing is a great introduction to the sport, and many facilities have professional instructors and safety equipment in place to guide and minimize risks for newcomers.
As The Gale Encyclopedia of Fitness reports, “Many people learn indoor climbing on a rock fitted with a top rope system and proceed to bouldering and other versions of the sport.”
Plus, it’s a sport for all ages! Some local family programs even show how parents can provide support to their young climbers.
- Health Benefits: A Rock-Solid Mind and Core!
Getting in shape or staying active is usually on everyone’s vision board come the New Year. Participating in climbing can help bring that vision to reality. This activity engages your entire body, with a focus on your core and upper body strength.
A study has shown that climbing, including bouldering—a type of rock climbing done on rocky outcroppings close to the ground (20 feet or less) without ropes or harnesses—can also help heal the mind. Researchers observed more than 100 people and found boulderers scored significantly better on depression tests. The difference was equal to moving from a diagnosis of moderate to mild depression.
- Mingle for Singles: Begin Your Climb for Love!
Annapolis Moms also recommends taking up the sport to meet singles with similar interests! You never know when Cupid will shoot his arrow. Here are some things to consider when climbing for love:
Pros: The element of danger can get your heart beating fast and inspire some flirty feelings.
Cons: It can be a bit challenging, and you’ll be in a vulnerable position in front of potential suitors.
Check out the winter issue of The Motherlode for more places to meet singles in Anne Arundel County.
