Gross cracked tile? Wood floors desperate for refinishing? Pergo from 20 years ago? We all seem to have at least one room in the house with tired hard surfaces that we’d love to rip up – if only we had the time, money or energy. But a well-sized rug can and should hide most of it, if not all, of your unsightly floors (if sized appropriately).
A new rug gives your room an instant makeover by hiding unsightly flooring, adding texture and color while dampening sound (hello moms of young loud children, I’m talking to you!). Always look for wool rugs which look and feel higher end and outlast their man-made counterparts. Start with discounted local and online retailers and be sure to sort by materials to find those taller durable rugs. Use a spray-on rug and carpet protector (apply outside for ventilation) to keep them looking their best.
Case in point – faux terracotta floors! When this homeowner approached me about creating a classically Annapolitan vacation rental, those floors screamed ‘NO WAY!’ Replacing them was not in the budget, but a great new rug was. Add some fresh new paint, and wow, what a difference a day makes. And just like making other important life decisions, keep these things in mind when shopping for rugs:
- Size matters! Buy rugs that are big enough for your room.
- Protection is essential! Spray your rugs to keep them looking fresh and clean.
- Go natural! Always opt for natural fibers like wool.
You’ve just created a fresh new feel and look for that tiresome-looking room.
