Fenwick Island, Delaware

April 22, 2024 by Frank Bolinsky

If you have plans this summer to spend time in Ocean City, Fenwick, or any of the other local Delaware beaches, make sure to plan a visit to the Discoversea Shipwreck Museum located in Fenwick Island, Delaware – right over the Maryland line.

The bottom floor is Sea Shell City, the coolest seashell store we have ever seen.  A large part of it is filled with your typical beach goods, but the back portion of the store sells pristine sea shells organized by type. Your kids will really enjoy perusing everything the store has to offer.  We walked away with some shells and a plush seagull with a french fry in its mouth – it was too much fun to pass up!

Against the back wall of Sea Shell City is the entrance to the treasure museum which leads to the second level.  There is a large display dedicated to the the early 17th century Spanish treasure galleon, Atocha, which the owner of the museum, Dale Clifton Jr with Mel Fisher helped discover.  The Atocha sank off the coast of Florida with over a billion dollar’s worth of treasure on it. Everything is behind glass, but the kids still had a blast looking at all the treasure. The museum is free but does take donations, and it has a small gift shop.  Hours are somewhat limited so make sure you check the website before going.  They even have educational resources that are fun for kids on their site.  If nothing else, keep this in the back pocket for a rainy day at the beach.

Worried about the rise in measles cases? Our community supporter SP Docs is too - but there’s good news. If your child is vaccinated, their risk is very low. The measles vaccine is safe and highly effective—about 93% after the first dose and 97% after the second.

Children typically receive their first dose at 12 months and a booster between ages 4 and 6. Babies as young as 6 months can be vaccinated in certain situations, like international travel or higher-risk areas.

At SPDocs, they’re here to help you navigate these decisions with confidence.
