Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE) Celebrates 25 years

Back on Superbowl Sunday of 1998, a few Eastporters were complaining about the upcoming closure of Spa Creek Bridge for repairs, and the damage it might do to Eastport businesses. So, to draw attention to their plight, they decided to secede and form an independent Maritime Republic, complete with a Declaration of Independence, MRE flag, a slew of semi-official titles, impromptu battles and late-night black-ops raids across the Gulf of Eastport. Those early days created some of our town’s signature traditions, including the Tug of War and the .05K Bridge Run. And in the past 25 years, the MRE has raised more than $700,000 for local nonprofits!
The party is being held on Saturday September 30, from the crack o’ noon til 5 p.m., outside at O’Leary’s Seafood Restaurant, 310 Third Street, 21403.
We’ll have bands (Eastport Oyster Boys, Grilled Lincolns, BlankPOINT Method), booze and bites for sale from O’Leary’s and Ruth’s Chris, and a few surprises and MRE memories too.
