One of Maryland’s biggest new employment stories is happening just outside Anne Arundel County, but local job seekers should still pay attention.
Anduril Industries announced a $3.7 billion investment in a new two-million-square-foot shipbuilding facility at Sparrows Point in Baltimore County. The project, called Arsenal-2, is expected to create more than 3,100 permanent jobs and support more than 14,000 jobs overall. Initial operations are expected to begin in 2030.
Why This Matters for Anne Arundel Workers
The shipyard will manufacture components for Virginia-class submarines under a U.S. Navy contract worth up to $2.9 billion. Anduril says future hiring will include technicians and operators, manufacturing engineers, quality and compliance staff, materials and support roles, manufacturing operations, and production testing.
That mix overlaps with skills already common across Anne Arundel County, including defense contracting, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, cybersecurity, technical operations, and military experience.

Anne Arundel County Councilwoman Allison Pickard called the project “an opportunity for the entire Baltimore region,” noting that it could strengthen maritime, manufacturing, logistics, and national-security industries across county lines.
The Opportunity Is Real, but It Is Not Immediate
This is an important distinction for job seekers. The 3,100 permanent jobs are expected to build over time, not appear all at once. Permitting and site preparation are beginning now, while initial operations are targeted for 2030.
That makes this less of a “apply today” story and more of a prepare now story.
Workers interested in these careers may want to build skills in advanced manufacturing, quality control, machining, engineering, logistics, production technology, and defense-related operations.
