Anne Arundel Jobs Are Shifting: Here’s Where Opportunity Is Growing Now

Anne Arundel jobs are shifting as Maryland’s latest employment report shows growth in some industries and cooling in others.

Maryland added a net 2,000 jobs across July and August. The state has now gained about 20,100 jobs during the first eight months of 2026. That represents 0.7% growth, compared with 0.4% nationally.

For local job seekers, however, the industries gaining jobs may matter more than the overall number.

Where Anne Arundel Jobs Are Growing

Across July and August, accommodation and food services added 4,000 Maryland jobs. Professional, scientific and technical services added another 2,800.

Arts and recreation, administrative support, and government also grew.

Meanwhile, construction, private education, healthcare and social assistance, retail, and transportation and warehousing lost jobs during the same period.

So, what should job seekers take from that?

Do not automatically give up on a field that is cooling. Instead, consider whether your experience could transfer to an industry that is hiring more actively.

Apprenticeships Could Create New Paths

Another development may create additional opportunities.

Maryland recently launched the Maryland Apprenticeship Incentive Program. Eligible employers and apprenticeship sponsors can receive up to $3,000 for each new adult apprentice and up to $7,500 for each high-school-level apprentice.

That could encourage more employers to offer paid, learn-on-the-job career pathways.

Maryland Labor Secretary Portia Wu called apprenticeship “one of Maryland’s most effective tools for connecting residents with meaningful careers.”

And apprenticeships are no longer limited to traditional trades. Recent Maryland programs have included computer support, marketing, graphic design, nursing assistance, childcare, building maintenance, and administrative management.

For anyone following Anne Arundel jobs, the message is simple: watch where opportunity is moving, not only where it has traditionally been.

Be open to transferable skills, new industries, and paid training pathways.
