Anne Arundel Job Search: Plenty of Openings, So Why Is It Still Hard to Get Hired?

August 10, 2026 by Admin

If your Anne Arundel job search feels harder than the headlines suggest, there is a reason for that disconnect.

U.S. employers had nearly 7.4 million job openings in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but made only about 5.3 million hires. Hiring, quitting, and layoffs all changed very little. In other words, jobs are posted, but employers are not necessarily filling them quickly.

Economists have increasingly described this environment as a “low-hire, low-fire” job market, where employers are not laying off workers aggressively, but they are also being cautious about bringing new people on.

That helps explain a frustrating experience for many applicants: seeing plenty of openings online while interviews and offers take longer to materialize.

What Should Anne Arundel Job Seekers Do Differently?

In a more selective market, sending the same résumé to dozens of employers may not be the best strategy.

Instead, concentrate on jobs where your experience genuinely matches the employer’s needs. Look for skills that appear repeatedly in the posting and make those easy to find on your résumé.

Whenever possible, show results rather than simply responsibilities. Instead of “managed customer accounts,” for example, explain how many accounts you managed, whether you improved retention, or how you solved a problem.

Applying promptly can also matter. If a position looks like a strong fit, do not automatically wait until the deadline.

And remember that transferable skills count. Project management, customer service, operations, communication, technology, leadership, and problem-solving can apply across many industries.

The Encouraging Part

This is not a market defined by widespread layoffs. Layoffs and discharges remained roughly 1.8 million in June, essentially unchanged.

For local job seekers, that means opportunity has not disappeared. The search may simply require more patience, better targeting, and a clearer explanation of why you are the right fit.
