Women’s History Month in Anne Arundel County highlights the amazing accomplishments of women who helped build this country and fought for the rights of its citizens.
A Little History
Harriet Tubman not only rescued about 70 enslaved people and led them to freedom, but also worked as an armed scout and spy during the American Civil War. According to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, “In 1863, she became the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, liberating more than 700 slaves.” The Army of the Severn was a group of suffragists (part of the Just Government League) who marched from Baltimore to Annapolis in 1914 in support of women getting the vote. And Anne Catharine Hoof Green took over her late husband’s publishing business, turning the Maryland Gazette into an important source of information and, if you think about it, paving the way for Annapolis Moms Media!
But this month is not just a history lesson. It’s a celebration of accomplishments that might have gone under the radar for too long. No matter who you are, you can learn something meaningful by checking out these events.

Who are the people telling our stories? And in what ways can we tell our own stories?”
The exhibition opened on February 7 and will continue until January 16, 2027, so you can see the amazing artwork long after March is over. And while you’re visiting the museum, you can learn about the heroic acts of Black women across Maryland history, including Harriet Tubman, Lear Green, Gloria Richardson, and more.
