The Real Mom May Recap

May 23, 2026 by Lisa Peri, MSW

Looking for trusted recommendations and real-life advice from local moms? Our weekly Real Mom Recap highlights the most engaging conversations from the Annapolis Moms Facebook group. From parenting wins to everyday challenges, here’s a roundup of what sparked conversation across our community this month.

Week of May 25

Marriage shattered by infidelity

One mom bravely shared the heartbreak of discovering her husband’s long-term affair and navigating separation while parenting two young daughters. Moms rallied around her with advice on boundaries, legal guidance, co-parenting expectations, and emotional support during an incredibly painful transition.

Grieving the family you imagined

After two failed IVF cycles, one mom opened up about mourning the larger family she always pictured while also feeling grateful for the child she has. The comments became a compassionate space for shared experiences around infertility, grief, and redefining family dreams.

School night sleepover debate

A seemingly simple question — are school-night sleepovers allowed in your house? — quickly divided moms into strict “absolutely not” and “sometimes memories matter more” camps.

Swim lesson recommendations

Parents swapped favorite local swim programs and instructors while helping one mom find the right fit for her daughter’s swim lessons ahead of summer. Many recommended Annapolis Moms Sponsor, Center Lane Swim School.

Medical mystery after Ecuador trip

A concerning post asked for help for a 20-year-old student suffering severe gastrointestinal illness after traveling to Ecuador. Moms with medical backgrounds and international connections weighed in with infectious disease suggestions, hospital referrals, and possible next steps for the family.

Week of May 18

Gym flirting etiquette

One local dad asked the group whether women actually want to be approached at the gym anymore, or if dating apps have officially ruined real-life connections. Moms had lots of opinions on respectful gym conversations versus interrupting workout time.

A 3-year-old genius?

A mom shared that her toddler has been reading since 22 months old and is already doing math and reading at an elementary level. The post sparked conversations about gifted testing, specialized schooling, and how to keep exceptionally bright kids engaged without boredom.

Teen driver insurance panic

After her newly permitted daughter got into an accident while not officially listed on the insurance policy, one mom turned to the group in full panic mode. Moms shared experiences, insurance advice, and reassurance about navigating teenage drivers.

Is grabbing food kid-free considered a date?

A simple relationship debate unexpectedly divided the group: if parents stop to eat together on the way home without kids, does that count as a real date night? Opinions were passionate.

Dumpling craze hits Five Below

Annapolis moms bonded over the wildly popular collectible dumplings, with some even planning late-night Five Below runs to snag them before they sold out.

Week of May 11

“Why Does Everyone Seem Unfriendly?”

A military family new to downtown Annapolis shared their sadness over feeling unwelcome and isolated while adjusting to the area. The honest post sparked a huge conversation about local culture, making friends as adults, and how hard parenting in public can sometimes feel.

Potty Training Debate Heats Up

An anonymous teacher’s frustration over non-potty-trained children entering public pre-K ignited strong opinions from both educators and parents about school expectations, developmental readiness, and support for teachers.

Mahjong Moms Unite

Local mom Jeanne Poole introduced her growing mahjong community, offering beginner lessons, casual play groups, and opportunities for women to connect socially this summer through the game’s rising popularity.

Gender Disappointment Discussion

One expectant mom vulnerably shared her struggle with disappointment after receiving early gender results. Moms responded with empathy, reassurance, and personal stories about processing complicated emotions during pregnancy.

Mean-girl Worries

A mom questioned how to handle overhearing her daughter and friend making hurtful prank calls during a sleepover. The thread quickly filled with parenting advice about consequences, peer influence, and teaching kindness early.

Week of May 4

Teen Relationship Crisis

One mom shared a heartbreaking situation involving her 15-year-old daughter in what appears to be a controlling and manipulative relationship. The post sparked serious conversation around teen dating abuse, safety, and where to find real support and intervention resources.

Botox Sticker Shock

Moms compared notes after one was stunned by quotes of $700–$900 for Botox. The thread quickly filled with recommendations, pricing insights, and tips for finding reputable (and more affordable) providers.

Beauty Glow-up Advice

A mom looking to feel like herself again asked for “life-changing” treatments with noticeable results. From facials to lasers to simple self-care resets, moms shared what made the biggest impact for them.

Special Needs Pet Grooming

A family navigating a dog’s brain tumor diagnosis asked for compassionate groomers able to accommodate mobility challenges. The community responded with thoughtful, gentle provider recommendations.

Psychic Medium Search

After the loss of a loved one, one mom asked for trusted local psychic medium recommendations, prompting a mix of referrals and personal experiences from the group.
