How to Know if Your Kid is Ready for Sleepaway Camp

February 12, 2024 by Chelsea Harrison

Sleepaway camp is a right of passage- but how do you know when your child is ready for that epic experience? With so many amazing camps in this area, the question might come up sooner than you think!

Here are some things to consider if your kiddo is starting to ask about sleepaway camps this summer:

  1. Interest and Enthusiasm:

Are your kids asking about sleepaway camp? Are their friends going or have already been? If your child is curious about the camp experience, it’s a positive sign.

  1. Independence and Self-Reliance:

Kids who are comfortable with tasks like making their bed, packing their bag, and managing personal hygiene are often better equipped to handle the responsibilities of camp life. If your child has been gradually taking on more responsibilities at home and showing a sense of autonomy, it may be a sign they are ready for independence.

  1. Successful Overnight Stays:

Has your child spent nights away from home before? With family or a sleepover with friends? Before committing to sleepaway camp, consider their track record of overnights away. Were these outings successful (minimal anxiety, phone calls home, following the house rules, etc.)? TIP: If you’re considering sleepaway camp, maybe schedule some overnights at friends’ and family members’ to test out how it goes before registering for sleepaway camp.

  1. Ability to Communicate Needs:

Can your child ask for what they need? Kids should be able to articulate their needs, express themselves to camp counselors, and seek help when necessary. In an uncomfortable situation, would they be able to approach an adult and ask for help? If you think they might be more likely to call you in a desperate state or stew in miserable silence, perhaps wait or at least make sure to have this conversation about communicating their needs before they go.

  1. Venturing Outside their Bubble:

Camp often involves trying new activities, meeting new people, and adapting to unfamiliar environments. Camp may involve challenges and disappointments, like drama with roommates or not loving the lunch choices. Can your child be resilient in these situations without their safety bubble close at hand?

Whether you’ve decided your camper is ready for that overnight adventure or you’ve decided this is another year for full- or part-day camps, you’ll find over 300 options in the Annapolis Moms Summer Camp Guide! Check out all the exciting camps here!
