This had been on my list forever. Paw Paw Tunnel is located in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park and opened in October 1850. We parked at the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground. We cut across the field and got on the C&O towpath that follows the Potomac River. You are not on the path all that long and you come to the entrance of the tunnel. Bring flashlights. I brought a flashlight for my son and wore a head lamp. The tunnel is more than a half-mile long and made of 6 million bricks. We went all the way through and snapped some pics on the other side and then trekked back. Super neat to see. And yes, you go up the stone stairs to the top of the arch above the tunnels.
