MRE Mercantile, a new men’s clothier in Annapolis, welcomed customers to its grand opening May 30. The store aims to bring something fresh to the men’s fashion scene in Annapolis, aiming to become the go-to destination for guys to shop, style, and socialize.
The men’s clothing and lifestyle store is located on Sixth Street in the heart of Eastport. It was founded by Travis and Cara Loving, a husband-and-wife duo.
“MRE Mercantile is a mash up of American style and southern hospitality,” Cara Loving said. “When people come in the door, we hope that they feel welcomed and excited and curious to get to know us and our brands.”
Travis, a Crofton native, played lacrosse at West Point before serving in the military. He later taught math and coached lacrosse before launching this new endeavor. Cara, who is originally from Hendersonville, North Carolina, has lived in Annapolis for more than 20 years. She brings extensive retail experience, having worked for companies including Under Armour, Warby Parker and Lululemon.
Created to fill a gap in men’s shopping in Annapolis, MRE Mercantile features a curated selection of brands that reflect the style and lifestyle of local residents. The store carries AG Jeans, Calder Carmel, Criquet, Duck Head, Faherty, Greyson, La Matera, Melin, Michael’s Concepts, Original Madras, Paige, Relwen, Rhone and Smathers & Branson.
Beyond being a clothing store, the Lovings hope MRE Mercantile becomes a community gathering place.
“We hope people understand it’s more than just selling goods,” Travis said. “It’s about the community experience.”
MRE stands for the Maritime Republic of Eastport, a nod to the neighborhood and its energy.
For customers who are not sure what fits best, the store offers personal styling sessions led by styling guides who can help pair pieces and build complete outfits. The store also has space available for charity events, business meetings, corporate events, launch parties and more.
