- DYK (Did You Know)? Charles Lord Cornwallis thought he had General George Washington and his troops cornered for good outside of Princeton, NJ. Cornwallis referred to Washington as an “old fox”, and sure enough, he was outfoxed. Washington in the middle of the night, secretly marched some of his army north to Princeton where the Americans won the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. The term “old fox” is the inspiration for Old Fox Books and Coffeehouse located on Maryland Avenue. This charming, cozy bookstore houses a coffee bar that serves Brown Mustache Coffee and local pastries. Their Fall seasonal drinks include a Fresh Pumpkin Spice Latte (housemade pumpkin sauce with pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, clove, brown sugar, espresso, and steamed milk), Malted Maple Latte (caramelized maple syrup, barely malt, a touch of salt, espresso, and steamed milk), Ceremonial Cacao Tea Latte (Ceremonial grade cacao, a touch of water, agave, and steamed milk), and Spiced Apple Cider (apple cider, homemade spice mix, and a touch of salt). Need a snacky snack? Grab a pastry or two, like a muffin (Apple Fritter or Pumpkin) or scone (S’mores, Jalapeno and Cheese, or Blueberry).
- P.S. Get lost! In the bookstore, I mean. It’s the perfect season to go down the spiral staircase and check out their witchy section. After you find a book, snuggle up with a cup of coffee in a cozy nook, or head out to their garden.
- The Fall season brings crisp sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, football, apple picking, and bonfires. It’s also the start of the holidays for some. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas hit folks back-to-back. Meal prepping and planning outside of the holidays tend to get stressful. Check out April’s Table’s Dinner Club for a“take-out” (or delivered) meal that is well-balanced and locally sourced without added preservatives. They feature a weekly rotating menu. Last week’s menu included a gluten-free Apple Maple Glazed Chicken (chicken leg quarters, roasted sweet potatoes, green beans), Smoky Shredded Beef and Black Bean Chili (with tomatoes and corn, over a baked sweet potato), and a 2 for $24 Chicken and Rice Stuffed Peppers (shredded chicken, rice, cheddar jack cheese, tomatoes, and scallions). They also have a frittata, soup, and big salad of the week. Whole food, plant-based, and vegan items are also available upon request. The order deadline is noon on Sundays.
- P.S. April’s Table now has a Lunch Club and Weekender Edition too!
