Local Food Finds | “Authentic Thai Near Me”,  Christmas Cinnamon Rolls

December 17, 2024 by Sarah Amyot

Your weekly dose of some cool food and dining finds around town!

Have a suggestion? We’d love to hear from you – submit it HERE!

  • Carlson’s is an unpretentious restaurant, well-known for their delicious donuts, but did you know they also serve authentic Thai food? My dad is from Thailand and I always take him here when he is in town. Our favorite appetizers include the Tod Mun Pla (a deep-fried fish cake and curry paste served with crushed peanuts and cucumbers in sweet sauce) and Som Tom aka Papaya Salad (shredded green papaya mixed with hot chili, tomatoes, string beans, and crushed peanuts). For entrées, you can’t go wrong with Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles with your choice of protein, eggs, bean sprouts, and crushed peanuts) or Chu-Chee Goong (shrimp and string beans with creamy red curry and steamed rice). Don’t forget about dessert! Order the mango and sticky rice.
    • P.S. They now offer delivery!
  • Guess who’s back? It’s Mrs. Wong’s Chinese Sesame Balls!  What are sesame balls?  They are a traditional Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour and filled with either yellow mung bean paste or red bean paste (both are sweet).  The balls are then rolled in sesame seeds and deep-fried until they are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.  They are often served over the holidays for dessert, as they are thought to bring good luck. Get 6 for $10 or 12 for $20.  Text her son, Sean, at 410-349-6514 to order by Thursday night. Pick-up will be on Friday or Saturday at Mings Café in Severna Park. Accepted forms of payment are cash or Venmo upon arrival.
  • The holiday lights are shining bright, and Elf on the Shelf is helping keep the kids in check this month. The only thing missing is good food! December’s Local Food Finds column will highlight several restaurants offering holiday events and menus. Check out our Festive Feasts List weekly for places to enjoy your holiday faves!
    • Make your holiday reservations today! Restaurants open for dine-in on Christmas Day:
      • Basmati will be open from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm for its lunch buffet and from 4 pm to 9 pm for dinner.
