Books are more than just words on a page. They offer a chance to escape into another world, learn something new, or see life from a different perspective. And for many readers, there’s nothing quite like stepping into a bookstore and being surrounded by shelves of stories waiting to be discovered.
With Independent Bookstore Day taking place on April 25, now is the perfect time to support a local business while picking up your next read. Here are a few local bookstores worth visiting.
Back Creek Books
Located on Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Back Creek Books is one of the most unique bookstores in the area. The shop caters to serious book lovers, offering rare and original editions dating back to the 1700s. In addition to books, visitors can browse historical maps, artifacts, and other collectibles.
Old Fox Books & Coffeehouse
Located on Maryland Avenue, Old Fox Books & Coffeehouse describes itself as a place “where story lives,” inviting visitors to “come for the books. Stay for the stories.” The shop offers a carefully curated selection of new and used books, along with gifts and stationery. It is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can also check the store’s events calendar for author readings, meet-and-greets, and other upcoming events. And while you’re there, grab a cup of coffee from the café.
Park Books
This Severna Park bookstore is the sister shop to Park Books on Main in Sykesville. The store carries new releases, children’s favorites, and a wide range of titles for all ages. Beyond the bookshelves, Park Books hosts a full calendar of events, including book clubs, author signings, board game nights, launch parties, and guest appearances. The store opens daily at 10 a.m. Closing hours vary throughout the week.
Park Books will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day with the following promotions:
- Buy online, spend $30, and get free shipping on anything in-store.
- 20% off all blind-date hardcover books.
- Spend $100 or more and get a free exclusive IBD activity book.
Wyrd Bookstore
Located in Edgewater, Wyrd Bookstore offers more than just a wide selection of books. With seating near the front windows and outdoor seating available, it’s also a cozy place to work, read, or enjoy a coffee and a snack. The store hosts monthly book clubs for a variety of genres, along with events such as journaling sessions, author meet-and-greets, and live readings. Wyrd Bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Wyrd will be getting in on the Independent Bookstore Day fun with live jazz music, mocktails, raffles, and activities.
Third Eye Comics
Comic book fans are covered too at Third Eye Comics. The Annapolis shop carries thousands of comic books and graphic novels, along with games, toys, figurines, and collectibles. As one of the best-known comic shops in the DMV, it’s a must-visit destination for comic enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a break from screens, visiting a local bookstore is a great place to start. Support a local business, pick up a new read, and start your next adventure.
