The holidays remind us of the importance of kindness, generosity, and supporting those around us, but what about our pets and other animals? In Annapolis, a network of compassionate organizations works quietly yet powerfully to make veterinary care and responsible pet ownership more accessible. Whether it is a stray cat needing emergency treatment, a family dog overdue for a checkup, or a household facing unexpected hardship, these local groups provide affordable services that keep animals healthy and out of shelters. Their work shows how a caring community can make a meaningful difference, not just during the holidays, but all year long.
H.E.A.R.T., Inc.
A new charitable organization called HEART, Inc. (Helping Every Animal Receive Treatment) offers pets in need affordable medical care. Their mobile clinic provides inexpensive immunizations and medical care to a community, enabling animals to stay with their devoted families! By expanding access to necessary and compassionate veterinarian care, H.E.A.R.T. Inc. hopes to lower shelter intake and euthanasia while assisting pets in remaining healthy, at home, and with their loved ones. Dogs and cats are members of our family, and H.E.A.R.T. can help ensure that pets live as long as possible by giving them essential medical treatment.
Rise Above Animal Rescue and Sanctuary
Founded as an official nonprofit organization in 2018, this group is dedicated to animal welfare, with a focus on the most vulnerable animals, including those who are ill, injured, elderly, feral, or in need of intensive medical care. Supported by a strong network of volunteers and foster families, their trap, neuter, and return program works to humanely reduce the feral cat population over time.
Rude Ranch Animal Sanctuary
This organization provides sanctuary, care, and rehabilitation for homeless, abused, and neglected animals, with a primary focus on cats that are feline leukemia virus positive, feline immunodeficiency virus positive, or elderly. With the support of donors and volunteers, they work to offer pets in low-income communities free medical care, vaccinations, and spay and neuter services.
Senior Dog Sanctuary
For elderly dogs who have lost their homes, this group offers a secure environment that brings them comfort and tranquility. Their amazing volunteers and staff collaborate with local medical professionals to rehabilitate the dogs and restore their happiness, giving them a second opportunity at unconditional love by finding them new homes once they’re well. Senior residents in Anne Arundel County can get pet supplies and food through the Tommy Raskin Seniors 2 Seniors Program. This initiative, which honors the late son of Congressman Jamie Raskin and his wife Sarah, aims to guarantee that the elderly population maintains the well-being and safety of their pets, regardless of any difficulties they may be facing.
SPCA of Anne Arundel County
A mainstay in the community, this group has a multitude of programs to help dogs, cats, people, and more! Pets for Patriots is a program that helps veterans adopt a new pet friend while giving the most overlooked shelter animals hope and a home. The Seniors for Seniors program places cats and dogs ages eight and older with adults age 55 and up, following standard adoption procedures, to support the wellbeing of both pets and their new families. The pet food bank, a temporary program that can last up to one year per person, is available to approved applicants who are struggling to feed their pet(s).
The shared dedication of these Annapolis organizations shows that compassion extends beyond people to every creature that shares our homes and neighborhoods. Through their tireless work, countless pets are spared from suffering, families stay together, and communities grow stronger. Together, we can help ensure that every animal, regardless of circumstance, receives the love, care, and dignity they deserve all year long.
