  1. Police Identify Woman Found Dead on Truxtun Park Trail in Annapolis

Annapolis police have identified the woman found unresponsive on a Truxtun Park hiking trail as Portia Latrice Jones, 44, of California. Officers were called to the trail near the tennis courts at about 2:36 p.m. January 28, and preliminary information indicates she may have slipped because of icy conditions. Police said they are awaiting the medical examiner’s autopsy report and that no foul play is suspected.

  1. Attempted Rape Reported in Glen Burnie; 34-Year-Old Baltimore Man Arrested

Anne Arundel County police said they arrested a 34-year-old man from Baltimore after an alleged attempted rape reported on February 5 in the Whitmore Court and Loyd Lane area of Glen Burnie. Police said an adult woman was in her vehicle near a dumpster when an unknown man approached, sexually assaulted her, and tried to pull her into his vehicle. The woman drove off and reported being followed, and officers later located a vehicle matching the description near a nearby Lowe’s; police said the driver refused to stop before the vehicle ended in a snow embankment, and the suspect was taken into custody after being found hiding behind a dumpster.

  1. Forward Brewing Outdoor Seating Dispute Heads to Annapolis Board of Appeals Hearing

A long-running dispute between some Eastport residents and Forward Brewing is scheduled for a new round of scrutiny on February 3 before the City of Annapolis Board of Appeals. Neighbors say the brewery’s outdoor operations expanded during the pandemic and did not scale back after restrictions eased, altering the block’s day-to-day quality of life with increased crowds and noise. Supporters describe Forward Brewing as a community-oriented small business that grew during a difficult period, while neighbors say city responses to complaints have been inconsistent and sometimes closed without a clear explanation. NOTE: Update, Forward’s Special Exception was approved, and they will be allowed to host 77 guests outdoors in the parking lot between March and October.

Annapolis police and emergency crews responded on February 4 to a reported shooting in the 400 block of Captains Circle near Admiral Drive, with initial reports indicating at least 1 victim and a Maryland State Police medevac request. Officials had not released confirmed details on injuries, the victim’s condition, or a possible motive at the time of the report, but later clarified that it was both a shooting and a stabbing, with two men and a teen arrested.

5.Mayor Littmann Removes Police Chief Edward Jackson, Names Capt. Amy Miguez Acting Chief

Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann removed Police Chief Edward Jackson and appointed Capt. Amy Miguez as acting chief, citing differences in management approach. Jackson had served as chief since August 2019. Littmann said he respected Jackson’s work on diversifying the department and advancing reentry and cold case initiatives, while Miguez, a 25-year veteran of the department, said she was honored to continue serving residents and credited Jackson’s leadership for helping expand opportunity within the agency.

What makes CYSO diff

What makes CYSO different? Opportunity.
This season, Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra students aren’t just rehearsing — they’re performing across the region and beyond.

Our Jazz Ensemble will appear at the Apex Arts Jazz Festival on Friday, February 13, and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival on Sunday, February 15. Our Flute Ensemble will perform at the Flute Society of Washington Annual Convention on February 14–15. A CYSO chamber ensemble will be featured at The Mainstay in Rock Hall on Sunday, April 19 — all in addition to our regular spring concerts, season finale, and two summer camps.

CYSO offers orchestras, jazz, and flute ensembles for students ages 8–21, with real performance experiences that help young musicians grow in confidence, skill, and community.

If you’re looking for more than just a weekly rehearsal, CYSO may be the right fit.
