Voices of the Enslaved: Charles Ball

Don’t miss this Black History Month lecture by Hammond-Harwood House director Barbara Goyette. It will focus on first-person accounts of life under slavery, daring escapes, and perseverance in the search for freedom.

Let’s learn about Charles Ball. His slave narrative recounts how he was enslaved in Calvert County, fought in the War of 1812, was sold numerous times and separated from family, suffered a tortuous march to South Carolina in chains, and escaped from a cotton plantation.
