SPARK! @ Captain Avery Museum
The Captain Avery Museum is hosting Spark! Places of Innovation, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition celebrating innovation in rural America, alongside a companion exhibit titled Buyboats to Beaches—100 Years of Resiliency on the Chesapeake Bay. This local display highlights the ingenuity and resilience of marginalized communities in the region. It features two parts: the Norman Gross collection of intricately crafted model Chesapeake workboats that tell the story of Shady Side’s Black maritime community, and a historical look at the summer colonies and beach retreats established by Black and Jewish families during segregation, including Columbia Beach and “Our Place” in Shady Side. Together, the exhibits celebrate community-driven creativity and cultural strength.
