Originally staged in 1870, Coppélia follows the comedic foibles of the feisty village girl, Swanhilda. When the local toymaker, Dr. Coppélius, creates a doll so true-to-life that everyone mistakes her for a real girl, it causes a stir in Swanhilda’s village. Franz, Swanhilda’s boyfriend, is particularly hoodwinked. Jealous of his attentions to this “girl with the enamel eyes”, Swanhilda sneaks into Dr. Coppélius’s workshop only to discover the truth: Franz has fallen in love with a doll!
No sooner does Swanhilda realize this when Dr. Coppélius returns. There’s nowhere to run or hide, so she does the only logical thing: she puts on the doll’s clothes and pretends it has come to life. Swanhilda must keep her wits about her if she wants to make it out of the workshop with the toymaker none the wiser!
Audiences will be charmed by Coppélia’s lively characters, whimsical humor, and joyful dancing. This playful narrative brings the perfect end to Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s 48th season.
