During the Revolutionary War, James Brice served as captain of the Annapolis city militia. He also served as county lieutenant of the Anne Arundel County militia, positions that earned him the honorary title “colonel.” But James wasn’t the only colonel in the Brice family. His brother Edmund, an artist by training, was named a lieutenant colonel by Congress at the personal request of the Marquis de Lafayette. Wartime responsibilities kept James Brice close to his Annapolis home, while Edmund Brice’s duties as an aide to Lafayette kept him on the move. Glenn E. Campbell, former senior historian of Historic Annapolis, explores the fascinating life stories and revolutionary experiences of two brothers who joined the fight for American independence.
