It’s time for spring cleaning! Get those windows washed, those carpets shampooed, and—yes, maybe it’s finally time to go through that closet. Luckily, those nice dresses, shoes, and handbags you’ve only worn one or two times (or…let’s be real…if at all) can earn you some cash. But you don’t have to worry about setting up an online shop or haggling at your next garage sale. Local consignment shops make it easy.
If you’re new to the game, a consignment shop takes your clothes, sells them for you, and gives you part of the proceeds. It’s easier than selling on your own and often pays more than quick cash offers or donations.
That being said…don’t expect a huge windfall. This isn’t going to pay for your next vacation. Just think of this as a way to clean out your home while getting a few bucks, just as long as you go about it the right way.
Crystal Young, who runs consignment shop Memories on Wayberry with her co-owner Sanovia Peterson, agrees, and offers her own tips and tricks:
- Don’t bring junk. “We love a good spring clean-out,” she says. “But we are not a thrift store. Old raggedy t-shirts and sweats are not what we are looking for. Think of it this way: If you walked into a boutique would you buy the item off the shelf AND wear it out if need be? If…the answer is no, then do not bring it in.”
- Make sure it’s in tip-top shape. “We turn down items because of stains, imperfections, odors, missing zippers/buttons, etc.”
- The shop may already have enough. “We also turn down items if we have an excess of an item. For example, a plethora of black or dark colors. We often get an abundance of blouses and shirts and have to turn some away also.”
- Not your style but still in style! “Lastly, if the item is not on brand or trend. For example: skinny jeans, heels, dress pants, or suits. Much of the world has become really casual and in many environments a more relaxed approach is appropriate or acceptable (church, work, funerals, etc.).”
So what should you bring? We’ve got more intel from Crystal on what shops and shoppers are looking for:

- Colorful pieces with style and shape
- Brooches, silver and gold jewelry, and accessories
- Athletic brands such as Lululemon, Alo, Athleta, and Nike
- Sneakers and unique footwear
- Handbags
- Plus one more category you may not expect: “FURS. We have found that there is a market for it year-round.”
Finally, Crystal adds that any size is welcome. “[W]e pride ourselves in carrying sizes 0-24. We want all people to feel as if there is a place for them at our store.”

Is your closet stuffed to the brim? No space for even a single wire hanger? Make some room and some money by selling them on consignment. While not all of your clothes will make the cut (sorry to my fellow Millennials, but our skinny jeans may have to wait 20 years to be in style again), selling on consignment is a great way to earn money for the items someone else will love. It’s a great way to support local, small businesses while putting some cash in your pocket. And when you’re done, use any cash, store credits, or discounts to treat yourself by buying something special! After all, your closet will have some room.
