You don’t have to be the area’s fastest runner to compete in the annual Bay Bridge Run, a 10K (6.4-mile) course that starts on the Western Shore and traverses the Chesapeake Bay to Kent Island. You simply have to be a little adventurous, and want to have some serious fun.
“It’s the most unique course you’ll ever see,” says Kristen C., who has run the Bridge the last four years. “You’re so high that you feel like you’re just floating in the air.”
That floating feeling extends for 4.35 miles, as runners (and walkers) reach a height of 186 feet above water. The first portion of the race is a steady climb for (gulp) 1.7 miles before starting a gradual descent toward land.
“Seeing sailboats beneath you is wild,” Kristen says.
Over the years, race organizers have taken into account the joy of walking among Chesapeake Bay residents, and so just the first three heats are designated runners-only (each heat is 2000 participants). To support the health of the Bay, organizers have removed water stations to keep course trash at a minimum: participants should bring a water bottle and expect to fill it up at one of two self-serve refill stations on the course. Hydration backpacks are considered essential gear.
Due to the uncommon nature of the course, strollers, pets, drones, and selfie sticks are prohibited. After finishing, a spectacular post-race party will offer live music, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and food for participants and their family and friends. Shuttles will be ferrying runners to and from parking lots, so keeping your kit lightweight is the best option.
The Bay Bridge Run is one of the most unique outdoor events in the country, and registration numbers are quickly filling up. To snag one of the last entry numbers, visit https://www.thebaybridgerun.com/ and get ready to race on Sunday, November 12.
