I have a memory permanently lodged in my brain from after my first child was born and we were recovering at our home in Tennessee. I remember going out to my car to go somewhere to get something to eat… I was almost down our long gravel driveway when it dawned on me suddenly that I had left my baby inside. There would be no more going somewhere on my own spontaneously. This little being that we had brought into the world would have to go where we went, to be fed, clothed and changed by us—how in the world had someone let us bring this baby home with us to our little house in the woods? We still felt like children ourselves.
Parenting is hard and it’s life-changing. That’s why surrounding ourselves with a supportive community is so vital. No one has all the answers, but someone may have an experience that resonates more than others.
I know what it’s like to have to juggle getting your paid work done and still make it to the bus stop so your children won’t be walking home in the rain or coming home to an empty house. I know what it’s like trying to sync up schedules with your co-parent so that everyone gets to the correct practice field on the right night for soccer…or theater rehearsals…or dentist appointments. It’s exhausting. You’re tired. I’m tired.
My job as editor at Annapolis Moms will be to find you not only interesting and entertaining content each week but also content that is useful and practical. I’m a no-frills gal myself—I know your time is valuable and I’m not going to waste the few precious minutes you have to yourself to read something.
What should you know about me? I was born and raised in north Louisiana in a family of almost entirely women – three sisters and all-female cousins. My husband and I have lived all over the Southeast (he works in ecological restoration). We have two children, one is a student at AACC, and the other is a sophomore at South River High.
I earned my degree in mass communications with a focus on print journalism. My career, up until a few years ago, was spent in newspapers in small towns. When life brought us to the Chesapeake Bay, I was hired as the calendar editor at Bay Weekly newspaper. When that company joined Chesapeake Bay Magazine, I became the paper’s managing editor until it ceased publication. Then my life as a digital content editor began. Throughout all the changes in titles, my commitment has been the same. To tell interesting stories. Important stories. And get to know a community, in depth.
That’s my commitment to Annapolis Moms. To get to know all of you, tell your stories and introduce you to the fascinating people we live and work next to every day. I hope you will send me an email or photo, and say hello in the grocery store (or the dentist’s office, I seem to be spending a ridiculous amount of time there these days). Tell me your stories, share your wisdom and ask me anything! Email kathy@annapolismomsmedia.com.
